Surrounding Towns and Villages

Beaune

The historic town of Beaune offers many tourist attractions including the famous Hospice de Beaune and the spectacular ramparts.  The Beaune Tourist Office is very helpful and the staff are multi-lingual.  Brochures are available with money off coupons for many attractions.  The "Passeport Cote d'Or" is good value and allows entry to several attractions within the cost.

Nolay

Nolay boasts a spectacular market place with a limestone-covered roof, and medieval alleyways. For more details of activities, please see Nolay

La Rochepot

The village and Chateau of La Rochepot are only 2 km from Orches (dir. Nolay). The famous chateau (reconstructed in the 1800's) is perched on top of the hill above the village; great views can be had from the opposite side of the valley from the road leading to St Aubin. The site dates back to the Neolithic, with dolmens nearby.

ST Romain

The historic village of St Romain is 2 km from Orches and is one of the oldest villages in the region. It is suurounded by high cliffs and the village is in two parts, the lower one in the valley, and the upper village perched on a rocky promontory with beautiful church and a XIIth century castle, destroyed in 1675. There is a beautiful walk which leads to a viewpoint over the surrounding vinyards.

RESTAURANTS

There are many superb restaurants to be found within a short distance of the house offering several local specialities. There are literally hundreds of restaurants in the area.  Some which we have tried and liked are:

La Cremailliere, Auxey-Duresses

Owned by M. Prunier, this excellent and very friendly restaurant has a wide range of local cuisine.

L’Auberge de Rochepot, La Rochepot.

On the main road at La Rochepot, it also has a garden and serves traditional Bourgogne food.

Relais de la Gare, Meursault

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Horse Riding, Climbing, Golf courses, Fishing, Water Sports, Bike Hire and Hiking can all be found locally.  There are many sites of historical interests in the area including Chateaux, Roman sites and Museums. There are marvellous geological outcrops, including the famous cliffs which stretch from St Romain to Nolay, the home of peregrine falcons, which can be seen hunting above the house.

Horse Riding

In Orches, on the outskirts of village, towards St Romain.  Suitable for children and adults. Lessons can be arranged. Tel:

At “Le Bout du Monde”, across the N6 in a lovely, wooded area in a huge, natural amphitheatre.  Childrens ponies only and accompanying adults are expected to walk round the circuits leading the horses.

Swimming

There is swimming available at Meursault, Nolay and Beaune.

There is a swimming pool/water slide in the “Grappe D’Or” Campsite in Meursault (Open May-Sept).  Seven, family, day visits will be provided by the Campsite if you eat a meal at the Campsite Restaurant, which is reasonable value and good for children.  It is best to ask at reception when booking the meal as they will not automatically give you tickets unless you ask.  There are usually a large number of UK and Dutch children at the site.

There is a large public pool at Beaune and a swimming lake outside Nolay (free), next to the public campsite.

Walking

There are many marked walking routes in the surrounding countryside.  Maps and guides for walking promenades can be found in most local bookshops.

There is a Gallo-Roman statue beside a small spring at the head of the valley which descends into Orches (take the highest road behind the house which leaves the village westwards).

There is an Observation Platform on the cliffs above Baubigny which gives superb views of the Orches area looking out over the Saone valley towards the Jura and Alps – take the road leaving Orches towards the N6 climbing up from the Tourist Information Board on the outskirts of Orches. The gravel road is approximately 500m on the left and is passable by car.

Adventure in the Trees

Near Givry (20 km south), there is an aerial adventure playground in the trees, suitable for all ages over 8 years. Very spectacular and well organised.

Parks

There is a lovely park in central Beaune (dir. Auxerre) which has a boating lake, children’s playground and a small children’s zoo.

Tourist Information

There is a large Tourist Information Office in Beaune, opposite the Hotel Dieu.  There is also one in Nolay on the main street (Route d’Autun) and a small one in Meursault opposite the Hotel de Ville.

Morvan

We are very close to the Morvan, a national park with lakes and an area of outstanding beauty, the perfect destination for walking, sailing and rafting.
